Development and history

Between tradition and present-day

Since the 13th century the Spiezer viticulture has been documented and it looks back on turbulent history. Economical and social impacts, and also the vine pest have troubled the Alpine viticulture. The winegrowers and later the winegrowers’ association Spiez didn’t let themselves get discouraged.

Nowadays the viticulture Spiez is the second largest winery in the canton of Bern with an area of about 13 hectares, eleven full-time and part-time employees look after the vineyards. Year after year the entire grape harvest from Faulensee, Spiez and Spiezwiler is processed in the cellar of the castle and pressed to make an exquisite wine. Between 70’000 and 80’000 bottles of wine annually leave the cellar and over 3000 loyal private customers as well as 150 catering businesses consider themselves fortunate enough to enjoy fine wines and spirits and to be able to offer them to their guests.

The winegrowers’ association

Here is where the wine is produced and sold

The vines are looked after by the winegrowers’ association. The viticulture in Spiez carries out the grape harvest and then presses the wine in the cellar of the castle. The organisation has a shop, in which the quality wines and other products relating to the Spiezer Alpine viticulture are available. Additionally the winegrowers’ association organises tours through the vineyards and offers degustation.
