Spiez Castle

Experience 1300 years of history

The Spiez Castle is one of the prettiest and the most impressive witnesses of the Bernese history. Originally a medieval fortress, the historic building changed over time to a patrician residence. The Spiez castle is a cultural and touristic spot with charm and charisma. This also includes special exhibitions which annually change, guided tours for groups and a picturesque castle café. The castle can also be rented out for seminars or weddings.

The wine museum in Spiez

The museum of local history and viticulture is located in a typical Simmentaler house from 1728. You can see the representation of a farming household, a complete cooper’s workshop, «Trüel» (wine press) with grape press and an exhibition about the work in the vineyards and in the cellar.

The best-known cultural heritage in Spiez are the vineyards. Together with the castle, they shape the landscape between the Spiezberg and the bay. Did you know that the Spiezer vineyard is the highest vineyard located north of the Alps? The Spiezer alpine viniculture looks back on an around 1000-year old tradition. With 11.5 hectares the alpine viniculture it is the second largest winery in the canton of Bern. 80’000 bottles of wine are produced annually. Also the most important festival in the yearly agenda in Spiez – the «Läset Sunntig» (wine festival) - is closely related to the viniculture.
